Tried and True Memories

I made a meal today for the family of a friend who's dad passed away. Whenever I want a recipe I can count on, I pull out my 'tried and true' recipe book. Don't you just love the old standbys that you know will never fail you?
I recently shared one with a couple of ladies who tried it said they loved it. I believe the words were scrumptious, yum, and so good
I thought I would post it here on my blog to give credit to my mom who passed it down to me. I don't know if it was her recipe originally but it has been in our family for 40 plus years and my first experience with it was at the holiday dinners at my mom and dad's house. So whenever I make it, I can't help but think of mom. I know she would be happy to know folks are still making this recipe and enjoying it.

Rosalie's Scalloped Potatoes

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 4 cups of milk
  • 6 cups of sliced raw potatoes
  • 1/2 onion, sliced thin (optional)
Melt 4 tablespoons butter; add flour and salt. Add milk slowly, stirring over low heat till sauce thickens. Add potatoes and bring to a boil. Put into a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish and dot with remaining butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Yield: 15 servings

Hi Marie so nice of you to share your memory and your Mom, and her Recipe for Scalloped Potatoes. I will try that one day soon..

I Also heard you have a great Meat Loaf recipe, I would like to have..

My Mom was a good cook too but loved baking, always something in her kitchen in the oven.. But My sister ended up with her Watkins Cook Book and hand written recipes..

Your Mom was a good looking lady.. and potatoes look scrumptuous.. Thank you.. Shelly

My grandmother was the most cheerful person I have ever known. Right up there in the same category as Santa in so many ways, I guess I have to say she was almost jolly – always with a smile and a laugh, always happy to see me or anyone else who might happen to visit, always with the question, “Are you hungry?” Her scalloped potatoes were (and continue to be, with my mother taking over where she left off) my favorite food. I can eat them as a meal, all by themselves – a little salt, a little pepper, and a really big plate. 15 servings? How about one and a half! Always smooth and creamy, always done just right. One day I will take up the honor of passing on her recipe, although I have yet to try to make them myself, as I do not want to risk spoiling my memory of the “tried and true” best scalloped potatoes ever! For now I’ll eat my mother’s re-creation, remembering my grandmother with every bite. Love you, Grandma. Miss you, Grandma. Thank you, Mom, for the memories – both old and new.

    Marie,
We have adopted your mom's (family) recipe now as the one and only Scalloped Potatoes Recipe. We loved it so much after the first time we tried it and it has now become a regular at our house.

I love the simplicity of it. I also made this for a neighbor who recently had a loved one pass away. They loved it as well.

Thank you for sharing this recipe. Your mom must have been a wonderful cook..every time I make it, I think of you and your mom and I didn't even know her..
I think I mentioned to you before we also used your Meatloaf Recipe and continue to use it to this day.
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
